TOP THINGS TO DO IN YUKON DURING WINTER

After spending a month in Atlin and being very lucky to try out all these things, I wanted to share a list of top activities to do around Canadian North. Yukon became more known during the Gold Rush, with the massive arrival of gold seekers from all over the world. But besides the gold mining, which it’s still happening by the way, now people come from all over for the white gold, they’re dreaming of and enjoy some massive powder lines all around the territory.

The winter season usually lasts from late November till May. That’s a lot of time to get some fun done.

> Snowmobiling

Cool thing is, that many people (almost everyone I’ve met) up here, own a snowmobile! It’s such easy transportation, for any kind of terrain! Yukon is one of the biggest networks for an endless variety of trails for snowmobiling in the world! During my stay, I went snowmobiling a couple times over the frozen lake of Atlin and it was amazing! Another idea is, to rent a couple of sleds with your friend, take a pick up truck and do a whole sledding road trip!

> SKI touring

There’s snow. There are mountains. What else do you need? Again, backcountry skiing is one of the top winter activities keeping people busy here. Some of the most popular routes are:

/ Summit Creek Hill
/ Fraser Peak North Couloir
/ Mount Log Cabin or Shallow Peak

Backcountry INFO

> Heliskiing

It’s absolutely the best and most popular way to get fresh powder, enjoy good views and make an unforgettable experience! Heliports provide an ultimate mountain experience and an awe-inspiring landscape of a true Canadian backcountry adventure!

> Take a tour with a helicopter!

Book a scenic helicopter tour for an experience of a lifetime! Birds view perspective is the best way to see the big mountains of the North. Soaring over the peaks of tree-lined mountains, I wouldn’t even realize at first, that everything is so huge and enormous! We could’ve even landed in Alaska, we came that close! The good thing about helicopter tours is, that you can take it in winter or summer, it doesn’t matter, amazing experience either way!

> Ski behind the snowmobile

This has trouble written all over it, which is just another reason, why you have to do it! On down days, it doesn’t matter if the weather is shitty or good, there’s no wrong time to toe behind the snowmobile and go for a rip over the field or a frozen lake!

> Cross-country skiing

Okay, to be honest with everyone I am not a fan of cross-country skiing. At all. I think it’s like going ski touring, without enjoying the downhill powder rides… However, some people (actually lots of people here) find it entertaining and enjoyable! And it does make a good workout, I’ll give you that.

Cross-country skiers here, enjoy the vast network of miles of world-class trails. It could also be a great idea to spend a northern-lights watching night.
