Soaking Up The European Sun At Home - Alenka Mali

Soaking up the sun in Europe

Long time no see. Or write. Okay, to start from the begging.

After celebrating my birthday and coming back from New York, I’ve been for the whole month of May mostly in Whistler, celebrating life and snowboarding every single day. Lot’s of sun and smiles. And working lots of course, because (unfortunately) I’ve got big ambitions and huge adventure appetite, which both frankly inquire a lot of money.

My riding days have been filled with camping in the forest, or on the top of the mountain, climbing in beautiful Squamish granite rock, soaking up the delayed spring sun and loving life, because nothing was missing in our little paradise under the sun, British Columbia.

Right before my graduation day I took a little road trip to Tofino, to get in some surfing in the rad waves at the west coast of the Vancouver Island. Beauty! A full week of bonfires, photo shoots, camping, exploring and SURFING. Then after wearing the famous cap and gown, and eating lots of sushi – I headed over the seas to Europe baaaby.

And so the adventure began.

First of all, saying hi to all the friends and family that I haven’t seen for couple years – no problem. Then telling everyone the same story, how is West side, yes it’s great and beautiful, yes –  I’m snowboarding, yes – I am surfing lots. Finished school? That too. Any criminals over there? No, thank god. Yes grandma, I’m being safe… and so on and so on.

Than, later on I had the pleasure to cuddle with my dog’s puppies, that she had about two months ago and after a couple days my dear mom decided there’s enough of lazy Alenka who just goes out to meet friends and sleeps all day – so she took me to Paklenica, Croatia for a whole week. Climbing, swimming, reading and having a solid wifi-free vacation on the Croatian coast. Also, finally after almost a year – getting some mother/daughter time with my badass climbing momma!

BUT THE ADVENTURE NEVER STOPPED…

After coming back from Croatia – a quick day with my youngest brother, Marko and off we go for another trip. Leaving for Tunisia was so fast-planning (or let’s be honest, no planning at all) and spontaneous, I LOVED IT. In less than half an hour, I booked a flight and a hotel, got my documents ready, packed my suitcase and I was on my way! Cheers, gotta love them trips like that!

So here I am, sitting on the sunny deck of our house, in central Slovenia, sipping homemade mint juice. Looking at the beautiful Alps of Kamnik and enjoying this mixture of peace and quiet, pouring like the finest champagne into my mind and creating a positive vibe in my life.

And it’s funny, because as the sun goes down, it gives everything this beautiful golden tone (no wonder the photographers call it the golden hour). It looks so stunning that I’m almost wandering why I left home in the first place. Almost. And it gets me wondering for a split second, why are we people so greedy, we always want more, explore more, see more, live more? But then again, the next moment I remember all those crazy adventures I’ve been through in my life, all the way from early years until now. I remember the feeling of coming into a new city, seeing people act differently and having different cultures. The feeling of finally climbing to the mountain peak and seeing the view, the feeling of going down a big wave, biggest that I’ve done before or sleeping on the beach with a sky full of stars, away from the city lights… And there it is, an answer to my question, and like most things in life, it’s so simple yet not.
