Down Sides Of Being A Digital Nomad

Ah, the digital nomad. One of the recently developed jobs in this world of technology.

Hi, from the office.

Which one? you might ask.

The home base. Where I take all my trips from Squamish, BC. A moment of appreciation for this place. –

Today I thought I could pop in and share some not so glamours stuff from behind the scenes of being a digital nomad. It’s not all good and gold, as they say.

What is a digital nomad?

To quote the Wiki answer; “Digital nomad works on a laptop computer in a cafe. Sometimes telecommuters, entrepreneurs or other people with flexible work arrangements work at places of their choosing rather than conventional workplaces.”

Which is pretty close. It kind of became a thing back in 2018 or even ’17 developedand now there is a huge community of people out there, doing that kind of work. Working remotely, online for a job back home, or any job around the world. The best part about an online-flexible job is the fact that you can live anywhere in the world, literally anywhere. Which is why visiting South East Asia gives you a great opportunity to run into plenty of digital nomads.

I think it’s awesome, but not as awesome as you think. Let me share 4 down-sider points of being a digital nomad with you today;

DIGITAL NOMAD PROBLEM N.1 : Finding WIFI

Yes, in order to complete our work, we will most likely need a stable wifi connection. Usually a stable is an issue, but the wifi part as well sometimes. And let me tell you, it is very frustrating. Are you frikking out because the wifi is being slow at home and your Netflix show is pausing every couple minutes? Well, it is even worse when the whole island gets wifi shut down and you can’t deliver your work on time.

DIGITAL NOMAD PROBLEM N.2 : Making friends and going out

When digital nomads travel to places like Bali or Thailand, they will most likely stay in hostels or home-stays. Those places will be filled with party people and generally those who are there for some good time, with work being the last thing on their mind. It is hard to concentrate since they are all outside having a blast of a pool party and as a digital nomad, you have to be locked in the room, trying to finish an assignment.

DIGITAL NOMAD PROBLEM N.3 : Doing Actual Work

I feel like most of the time, I spent schedueling meetings, completing my to-do lists and answering emails. When it comes down to doing my actual work, there is not really much left of it.

DIGITAL NOMAD PROBLEM N.4 : Brand Collaborations

Brand collaborations. Oh yes, traveling around remote places, every once in a while we stumble upon an opportunity of collaborating with hotels and resorts. It is an absolute dream of every Instagram influencer. But the problem is that even when we stay in those exotic hotels and get magical massages, we can’t fully relax because we are thinking of the post we will have to create, to satisfy the marketing team of that hotel, how many stories we have to post and how long the blog post should be!

But it’s not all bad and dark. I love being flexible and listening to my heart, where the road takes me, is where I’ll go. Being a digital nomad is not for everyone, nor is impossible. you learn how to be your own boss, how to manage time and make priorities. You are the only one who will make yourself accountable and responsible for your actions.
