Roosters Gone Bad, Alenka Gone Mad

“Not sure how I feel about staying here any longer”

Ha. My very exact thought, every 5 minutes, all night long last night. I’m not even kidding, a part of me wanted to get out of Indo first possible thing in the morning. I was really debating about getting out of bed and looking at how much is going to cost me to change my flight back to Canada. Man oh, man.

Rewinding back 24 hours.

Canggu. 4.55 am.

My alarm clock goes off. I’m super excited because today’s the day that I move down to Uluwatu. Away from busy Canggu livin’. I thought I needed some alone time so maybe moving to Uluwatu for my last month will be a grand idea. I packed everything the night before so I loaded my poor scooter with a 30 kg bag on my shoulders, a smaller backpack with all the camera equipment in front of me, my seat full of coconut smoothie bowls and oh, a 9’3 log on the side! Yup…

The reason why I woke up so early was simple, I wanted to beat all the frikkin Bali traffic and everyone who’s ever been to any of the southeast Asian countries knows exactly what I am talking about! Since I wanted to start my “pagi” with a positive mindset, this was the way to go. Around 6 o’clock, I arrived somehow safely, to my new home! A cute bungalow, by the local homestay, seemed very nice at first. The family is super friendly and welcoming. My little apartment was very breezy and open! Ahh, full of light… That, I love. I headed to Bingin beach for a quick swim and then enjoyed a raw wrap + green juice on my way home, at Kelly’s warung. Love love love that place!

To be honest, I was getting a really good feeling about the whole thing.

I watched a great movie, called Smile and then read my book for like an hour. It was one of those evenings when you’re just like;

“ahhh…” staring at yourself in the mirror… “isn’t life just wonderful?”

Went to sleep around 10 pm and indeed it was. For about an hour. That was it.

I’m not even kidding now. The lovely homestay was a zoo, it’s just that I didn’t know that yet. From the ghecko party in my room to dog fights (or mating?) by my bungalow and at last (the best part)… the frikkin rooster! That guy had some time on his hands last night. Trust me, it was a party. And I’m not new to this, ok? I’ve spent more than enough time in Bali and I know that roosters are a common thing here.

Usually, I don’t mind, roosters having some fun, trying to wake everyone up at 3 am.

You know, it’s common. When you’re living in a homestay or a guesthouse, away from the crowded streets…there will be roosters. Ohohoho. Well, this guy was loving it. I’m not exaggerating when I say he was screaming every 5 to 10 minutes. From 1 am to 6 am. Straight. Damn. Around 4 in the morning I pretty much gave up on my options of getting any sleep, so I got up and went to sip my mate tea and angrily read the Belly magazine.

When the owners woke up I explained my situation. It wasn’t just that. The bungalow where I was sleeping, basically didn’t have proper walls made. So I noticed how all my electronics got like weirdly wet/damp overnight and the batteries went down to 0%. I pretty much figured this isn’t it. If I wanted to really enjoy Uluwatu and its pristine beautiful beaches, I will have to leave.

I booked a whole week of stay at Bingin INN. We’ll see how that goes. I’m moving tomorrow…

Every day is a new opportunity to learn something new, or maybe face the situation that makes us stronger. Took me a while to figure that out, but I did so here I am. Sipping my green juice in Bukit Cafe in Uluwatu and being smart at life.
